Design Management Europe Award to start its first round

Design Management Europe Award to start its first round

EU companies put to the design test
Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen is creating new momentum for corporate management throughout Europe: Already renowned for its red dot design award, the design association is now instituting the “Design Management Europe Award” (DME Award) for the evaluation and appraisal of design management within corporate management. The contest addresses industry, the service sector, public institutions, as well as start-ups from the EU and is held under the auspices of the European Union. The project is supported by 18 partners from 14 countries. The winners of the DME Award will be honoured at a festive awards ceremony on 22 November 2007 in Essen.

To succeed in the global market, Europe must build its competitive and innovative strength in regard to Asia and the United States. In line with the motto “Corporate Management – Better by Design Management,” Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen views the DME Award as a significant way of contributing to a pan-European corporate governance and to thereby sustainably enhance the status of design and design management in corporate management.

“Measuring and evaluating abstract concepts such as company goals or design strategies is no easy task. However, the DME Award sees its challenge in precisely that difficulty,” says Professor Dr. Peter Zec, director of the Design Zentrum, initiator of the red dot design award, and president of the international design umbrella organisation Icsid. Zec went on to say that “The evaluation criteria are based on our experiences with the red dot award, which distinguishes a red dot: design team of the year as well as outstanding products and communication strategies from a large number of submissions every year. Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen has over a 50 years of experience and high international recognition in design promotion and the organisation of design contests. Our experience has taught us that design-oriented corporate management leads to greater competitiveness and more economic success. The DME Award wants to encourage this type of corporate management throughout Europe.”

Professor Dr. Peter Zec has enjoyed global success for many years with the international design contest “red dot design award.” As a design expert, he confirms the increasing significance of design and design management for a globally oriented, successful corporate management and wishes to contribute to building such a company culture throughout Europe. The integration of design and design management into key business processes will allow companies to distinguish themselves significantly within the growing international markets.

The DME Award is part of the EU project ADMIRE (Award for Design Management Innovating and Reinforcing Enterprises). With 18 partners from 14 countries, this pan-European project aims to support companies throughout Europe in their tasks of strengthening design and an international awareness for design and design management as a basic economic factor, of identifying the targeted use of design in business processes, and of promoting innovative strategies. Participating in the project in Germany is, aside from Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen, Wirtschaftsförderung Region Stuttgart GmbH, an institution that underscores design in companies as a major economic force.

About the contest
The DME Award sees itself as a type of awareness raising campaign for the growing significance of design management and wishes to give managers throughout Europe the possibility to become distinguished for innovative and sustainable strategies and successful, integrative design policies. The award is an effective marketing tool and will serve to improve the competitiveness of small and medium-sizes companies within the European and international markets. To participate in the contest, companies must a) be nominated by an umbrella association or b) submit an application on their own initiative, i.e. without being nominated. Participation in the contest is free of charge.

The awards ceremony
The awards ceremony of the DME Award will take place on 22 November 2007 in a festive setting in Essen, Germany. Following the ceremony, the award-winning companies will be presented to the public in a special exhibition in the red dot design museum in Essen until 31 December 2007. After that, their presentation will be showcased in numerous places throughout Europe in a travelling exhibition. The award-winning companies will also be presented in a yearbook that enjoys international renown.
